What is the difference between a driver and a chauffeur?

A driver is essentially someone who can operate a vehicle from one location, to another.
A chauffeur is a professional driver with the etiquette required to provide the service required.
They are trained to provide a luxury service.

I can drive, can I be a chauffeur?

To be a professional chauffeur you are required to have many years’ experience of driving. You would be also need to have very good geographical knowledge of the area you are expected to drive in. It is also a benefit if you have attended an advanced driver course or had experience driving luxury vehicles such as Rolls Royce or Bentley.

Our clients generally seek chauffeurs with a minimum of 4 years’ experience where you have worked for a private individual as either a corporate or family chauffeur.

You may also be required to deal with security and close protection duties.

What are the typical duties expected of a chauffeur?

As a chauffeur you are expected to:

Maintain the car
Keep the car ready at all times in case of importune journeys
Conduct all routine maintenance
Valet and keep the car in pristine condition
Keep all of the paperwork including MOT, car tax and insurance up to date
You are required to plan your routes effectively to ensure the passenger is kept safe and comfortable during their journey
And most importantly be on time for the end destination

Additional duties may include:

You may be asked to do the school run
Deliver messages or confidential documents
Escort household staff to run errands or do some shopping
Assist passengers with their luggage and help them to get in and out of the vehicle

Many chauffeurs who work from private households also assist with keeping walkways and driveways clear and clean and exercise pets. Many large companies hire full-time chauffeurs simply to alleviate the need to drive so they can work whilst travelling.

What skills are required?

An excellent knowledge of the local roads
Good anticipation and safe all-round driver
Attentiveness to a customer’s demands
Knowing when to offer advice and when to remain quiet
Discretion and confidentiality is key
Tidy appearance and a professional polite manner
Valid driver’s license
Proven experience as a chauffeur
Acquainted with GPS software and local traffic reports
Ability to interact with clients in a warm, professional manner
Excellent organisational and time management skills
Flexibility to work during evenings, on weekends, and on public holidays, as required
