Things to look at
Surroundings, location and focus
Is the photo clear and bright? Does the background in the photo look appropriate? Think about what is in front of you or around you, does it look professional? You want your prospective employer to focus on you, not what is going on in the background.
Professional attire
Dress in business attire that is appropriate for the job you're applying for. Bare shoulders in some cultures is considered offensive. Ensure you are wearing a nice blouse or shirt, something professional and smart. You can add a jacket and tie but think about the job you are applying for, if you are applying for a position as a chauffeur and you are required to wear a suit and tie for your job then wear this in your photo.
Good lighting
Make sure the lighting is bright enough to show your face clearly, but not so bright that it washes you out. Natural lighting is perfect, if you can.
Smile
A friendly, natural smile can make a positive impression on a potential employer.
Head shot
Use a head shot, rather than a full-body photo, and make sure the focus is on your face. We want you to send a photo of your head, shoulders and upper body so we can crop the photo to go onto your CV.
Neutral background
Choose a neutral light coloured background, such as a plain wall or a solid-colored curtain, to avoid distracting from your face..
High resolution
Use a high-resolution photo to ensure the image is clear and sharp.
Correct orientation
Ensure the photo is correctly oriented, with your head and shoulders facing straight ahead.
With smart phones it is easy to get your friend to take a picture of you so you don’t need fancy equipment to take a profile photo. Take your time to find the right place, take it at the right time (so during the day is better with no shadows on your face or in the background). Wear something smart, not too colourful, you are a professional! Brush your hair. And SMILE! You are professional but also friendly and approachable.
