A couple team will liaise on your behalf with contractors, builders, workmen, deal with deliveries/goods and services to the property and look after tutors, visitors etc.

Of course there is a huge variety and combination of roles that hiring a couple can offer to a client – every clients’ job is unique and as well as all the basics of the role (washing, cleaning, cooking etc), clients may also need someone with certain specialist knowledge, for example in gardening or the care of antiques or classic cars.

We have compiled some questions and details of what is required and expected of a “couple team” to assist both clients and candidates.

What is a “Domestic Couple”?

A domestic couple is a team who will work together to ultimately manage a private household for their principal. The role can be varied and couples will be expected to work well on their own carrying out their own individual duties, as well as assisting each other to meet the principal’s expectations and needs.

What are the typical duties and responsibilities of a couple?

This is often client specific. A standard requirement would be housekeeper and gardener with one working inside and the other outside. In some more formal homes you might also be asked to carry out butler duties, waiting at table and meeting and greeting guests. Driving is also an important requirement and most positions would require at least one or the team (if not both) to drive.

  • Organising and managing contractors and suppliers
  • Maintenance duties, interior and exterior
  • Gardening
  • Driving and looking after the cars
  • Cleaning of swimming pool and garden areas
  • Front of house including table service (formal or informal service)
  • Security of the property and grounds
  • Looking after pets
  • Seasonal jobs on the grounds and property
  • Running errands
  • All housekeeping duties including cleaning, washing, ironing
  • Cooking
  • Shopping for the household

What skills are required?

As with any domestic service job, flexibility and discretion is key. Previous private experience is also expected by potential employers and we would require a minimum of 4 years’ experience. You should be able to work well as a couple and manage your time well using initiative. A good work ethic with a keen eye for detail is a must and you should also be happy to be hands-on when required.

What is a live in couple?

Generally a domestic couple would live on the estate or within the property full-time and all year round (apart from annual leave). Accommodation would normally be onsite and could vary from a self-contained flat to separate house.

What is a typical working week for a couple?

As a couple you will have your days off and holidays taken together – you may, on occasion, be required to work weekends and have 2 days off in the week. Generally we would expect you to work 40 hrs per week, but should be flexible to the principals’ needs and requirements. You would be expected to do extra hours when the principal was in residence, and less when the client was away.

How do couples get paid and how much could we earn?

You would be paid as individuals – roles will be advertised as combined salaries but you’re treated as individual for tax and NI contributions.

Our roles are advertised as joint salaries for 2 people, both working full-time. This can range from £50,000 upwards depending on experience and location.

Could this be a long-term career?

Yes of course – you could join a household as a junior couple to gain more experience. During your employment you may take on further responsibilities to progress your knowledge and experience with the end goal of working within a larger household.

If, at any time you decided to work as a single candidate, your experience working as a couple would still be recognised.
